Back to School, Back to Breakouts? Skincare Tips for Students in the 419

Between studying, stress, sports, and routine changes, breakouts can flare up out of nowhere once the school year kicks in. Whether you’re a college student at BGSU, UT, or still in a Toledo area High School, here are some simple and effective ways to keep your skin in check.

For High School & College Students:

  • Clean your phone! All that texting and scrolling? It can transfer bacteria to your skin. I recommend having alcohol wipes or spray on hand, keep them in your backpack or gym bag. Do not forget to clean your laptops and tablets as well.

  • Post-practice refresh: Instead of face wipes, I recommend using a hypochlorous acid spray that gently reduces bacteria and soothes the skin. I highly recommend Mixi Skincare’s Mixi Mist It’s available to purchase through me and is a must-have for after practice or workouts.

  • Avoid over-washing: Twice a day is enough, even if your skin feels oily. If you feel like that’s not cutting it, you might need to change up your cleanser. Some formulas aren’t the right match for your skin type or concerns. A quick consult I can help you find one that works with your skin, not against it.

  • Wipe down things that touch your face daily. Like your glasses, headphones, and sports equipment. These surfaces can collect oil, bacteria, and sweat that transfer to your skin without you realizing it. You could also use your hypochlorous acid spray (Mixi Mist) on these items as well!

Dorm Life Must-Haves:

  • A simple 3-step routine: Cleanse, Hydrate, and Protect. I recommend using a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen. Follow with a hydrating serum, gel or moisturizer, remember to check for potential pore clogging ingredients if you are acne prone. Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF in the morning, even on cloudy days. It protects your skin from UV damage and helps prevent additional pigmentation marks from healing breakouts.

  • Watch the energy drinks and caffeine overload. While pulling late night study sessions is sometimes unavoidable, excess caffeine (especially from sugary energy drinks) can spike stress hormones like cortisol, which may lead to more breakouts. Instead try balancing it out with water, herbal teas (Green Tea), or anti-inflammatory foods like berries and Brazil nuts.

  • Keep Face Reality’s Pimple Patches on hand for targeted spot treatments—they’re gentle, effective, and available in my studio

Bonus Tip: Come in for a consult with me before school starts or even after! I do offer evenings and weekend appointments. My Maumee skincare studio is just a short drive from Perrysburg, Sylvania, and even a manageable drive from if located across the border in Bedford, MI. I would love to help you!

Peace, Love & Clear Skin,

Emily
